In today’s world we are subjected to toxins everywhere.  The air that we breathe has been polluted by car emissions, smoke stacks and other airborne chemicals.   The food we eat is even worse: preservatives, pesticides, steroids.  And then there are the ways in which we voluntarily pollute our bodies with cigarettes and alcohol.  Plain and simply we cannot, as best we try, keep toxins from getting into our bodies.

Fortunately, our bodies were designed with a natural self-defense against the toxins which attack us.  That self-defense mechanism is our liver.  The liver’s main job is to act as a filter to purify our blood and remove the toxins.  However, the liver can only handle so much.  It was designed for a time when pesticides, preservatives, and other man-made poisons were not around.  It could pretty easily handle the few pints of ale and smoke from the fireplace in days gone by, but today, we need to help it all we can.

We found an excellent article and video on the website (direct link below) that goes into a good amount of detail about their top 14 picks foods picks for both cleansing the liver and keeping it healthy.  While they recommend a liver and gallblader cleanse twice a year, adding these 14 foods to your regular diet will help keep your liver healthy year round.

So after the video we’ll list the foods for you so you can print the page if you like.

So what did you think?  Any surprises for you?  What are your top three favorites already in your diet?

Here following are the 14 foods the video recommends that you can add to your diet to help cleanse your liver.

1. Garlic

2. Grapefruit

3. Beets and Carrots

4. Green Tea

5. Leafy Green Vegetables

6. Avocados

7. Apples

8. Olive Oil

9. Alternative Grains

10. Cruciferous Vegetables

11. Lemons & Limes

12. Walnuts

13. Cabbage

14. Turmeric

Our livers protect us every day.  We need to do our part to help detox it so it can flush toxins from our bodies.  One final note: some foods like grapefruit can interact with medicines you may be taking.  If you are on medication, make sure you know if there are food interactions which could have harmful side effects.  And, as always, make sure to choose the naturally, organically grown foods and herbs. Bon Petite!
